Escape into Darkness

I found myself yet again in another city, in another underground vamp club full of fakes. With their white pancake make-up, black lipstick and acrylic fangs they wouldn’t know a real vampire if it bit them on the ass. They were tattooed and pierced wannabes without a clue as to what a real vampire might look or act like.

I’m not sure why I kept searching those places. I guess I hoped eventually I would find something real masquerading among the fake. What better way to hide than among costumed phonies with coffin-shaped purses and black lacquer fingernails? I could find it amusing since I had once been one of them. A painted Goth corpse obsessed with death. Now I knew that it wasn’t about death; it was about eternal life. A life that could not end through illness or accident.

That night was my third at that club. So far I had found nothing real interesting though this bar was full of eye candy. A wide variety of people moved about the club dancing, drinking and mingling. A lot more than just black haired Goths and vampire wannabes wandered around. I eyed fairies, pixies and some other winged people along with a couple witches and some indeterminate elementals. The club seemed to have an interesting dress code … or lack of one. If there had been a stage or poles I would have thought it was a strip club based on the extremely skimpy attire some of the women were wearing. One young woman strolled by wearing a completely see though short black dress and heels … that was it. No underwear or anything on underneath.

I sat alone at a little table feeling very overdressed in my corset top and long skirt with a slit all the way to my thigh. I even wore panties underneath. Yup, I was so overdressed for this place. At least it wasn’t as bad as the first night when I showed up in full Goth gear complete with long black skirt, long sleeved top and tall boots. I felt like a nun showing up at a nude beach.

I sat there and sipped my drink while eyeing the crowd, wondering if any one of them could be real. A real vampire. I wanted so desperately to find something real. Someone, something that wouldn’t die on me. My parents were killed in a car accident when I was 10. After that my grandmother raised me. She died right after I graduated from high school. Then two years ago my fiancé, Jim, suddenly died from a brain aneurism. I was sick of death.

During college I dabbled in the Goth lifestyle. After Jim died I fell back into it, deeper and harder. Then I almost died. I woke up in a hospital. I had lost a lot of blood. The police had found me in an alley outside a club. My shirt was ripped and my underwear was gone. I couldn’t remember what had happened and the police couldn’t explain it.
